L’italian dream di Kristian Zahrtmann (A cura di Antonio Bini) D’Abruzzo Libri – Edizioni Menabò. Alla fine dell’Ottocento, sulla scia del Grand Tour, Kristian Zahrtmann si era avventurato nell’Italia meno conosciuta, in Abruzzo, giungendo in un piccolo paese sulle montagne, Civita d’Antino, che divenne la sede estiva della sua scuola d’arte. Dal rapporto di amicizia tra il maestro danese e la popolazione nacque un’intensa stagione creativa che influenzò l’arte scandinava, culminando in una mostra che si tenne presso il Kunstforeningen a Copenhagen nel 1908. Il libro apre una finestra su quella straordinaria stagione, attraverso testimonianze, immagini, documenti e riflessioni, tra passato e presente, per non dimenticare Zahrtmann e i pittori scandinavi e per rompere il secolare oblio che avvolge il paese dopo il terremoto del 1915.
L’italian dream di Kristian Zahrtmann At the end of the nineteenth century, in the wake of the Grand Tour , Kristian Zahrtmann had ventured in the less known Italy, Abruzzo, reaching a small village on the mountains, Civita d’Antino, wich became the summer seat of his art school. The relationship of friendship between the Danish painter and the population originated a strong creative season which influenced Scandinavian art and culminated in the exhibition held at the Kustforeningen in Copenhagen. This book opens a view over that extraordinary season by testimonies, images, documents and reflections, between the past and the present, so as not to forget Zahrtmann and the Scandinavian painters and to break the agelong oblivion which wraps Civita d’Antino since the earthquake in 1915.

Lettera a Carl Thomsen, Civita d’Antino – 11.12.1883 Qui è davvero incantevole. Adesso i faggi si tingono di giallo e rosso tutt’intorno sui monti. Il colore di essi, argenteo e striato di lavanda, contrasta i colori vellutati dei faggi. E poi dovresti vedere l’uva nella vallata, foglie gialle chiare – con la tonalità dello zolfo – e l’uva che pende viola, piena. Siamo nel mezzo della vendemmia…
Letter to Carl Thomsen, Civita d’Antino – 11.12.1883. This is a really charming place. Now the beeches are turning yellow and red on the mountains, their silvery and lavender colours are contrasting with the velvet line of the trees. Then you should see the vineyards in the valley; straw yellow — sulphuric like — leaves and the grapes hanging in thick purple bunches.
Lettera alla madre, Civita d’Antino – 06.05.1889 La vita a Civita è come una lunga festa. Tutti si fanno in quattro per noi. Tengo una giovane coppia come modelli. Sono veramente belli, uno accanto all’altra. Dalle 8 e 30 alle 11 e 30 dipingo all’aperto tre ragazze che salgono la scalinata; una quarta ragazza le fa “rigare dritte”. E’ divertente lavorare con loro.
Letter to his mother, Civita d’Antino – 6.0.5.1889. Life in Civita is like a never ending feast. Here everybody bends over backwards. A young couple is working for me as models. They are so beautiful, one next to the other. From 8:30 to 11:30 I paint outdoor and I portray three ladies going up the flight of steps; there is also another girl who makes them behave properly. I greatly enjoy working with them.
