Skovgaard preferiva rimanere a Sora”

In the Danish book “En Mindebog”, at page 371, Kristian Zarthmann describes his arrival, for the fist time, in Civita d’Antino, early in the month of June 1883, together with his friend and colleague Skovgaard.

“…the climb made us sweat, sometime we had rest, our guide did his best and finally we reached the goal At the very beginning of the village we saw just low stables good for goats and donkey, it was a desert; everybody was sleeping. When we arrived in the middle of the village an old and charming lady appeared  …”Could you please tell us where we could find some good wine?” “Sure, but where you came from gentlemen?” “We cam from Rome” … “..And who directed you to this place?” … “It was a model, his name was Ambrogio, and he told us that the wine is excellent!”

… “Well Ambrogio is my son, and I will offer you some good wine” The old lady went ahead as light as a gazelle, till the Cerroni’s family house. She rapped strongly the knocker and after a while the three Cerroni’s daughters went out. They dropt off on the loom, it was really hot. “Could we have some wine? And should be possible to have something to eat too?” They were not completely asleep and probably we looked very strange to them. The last stranger that spent his night in Civita came more than 30 years ago! “My home is your home, we are at your command and we will offer you as much as possible, come in please” “Thank you but we don’t want to take a cold, we came from hot to cold shade, we are very hot.” “Come in, inside you will find a warm fireplace” So we entered in the most adorable Italian family that I ever met, all the three daughters get on with the job all together to prepare a delicious meal as fast as possible.

They indulged us in everything but we gave up letting our guide sit with us at the same table. For him they prepared a table with a white table linen near the window. “Did you notice with such a kindness they serve us?” Skovgaard asked “This is what I was thinking about, and I have to tell you that I would love to remain in this place” “You are a bit hasty, you didn’t see a subject yet, and you want to paint already” “You are right, but I think that in such a place we can give our best!” We went out to visit the Village, the fountain, the beautiful big square, the rosy Ferrante’s Palace, old aristocracy. We were very surprised by a huge heavy chain placed in front of the main door, it was placed during King Ferdinand II visit, and he slept in the palace. We said goodbye to Cerroni Family and I asked if they could provide me an accommodation since the 5th, in this case I would have been packing in Sora. Skovgaard preferred to remain in Sora”
