Ianieri, Chieti, 2002, p. 262.

D’ANNUNZIO DISCOVERED “THE ZAHRTMANN’S SCHOOL IN VENICE” (1895) The exhibition breaks a secular silence. The earthquake of 1915 – which involved the Abruzzo dramatically (and in particular the Marsica area) – determined the end of the golden season of Scandinavian painters in Civita d’Antino. Nearly one hundred years later and after another tragic earthquake that struck the region, the extraordinary human and artistic story of the colony of painters led by the Danish master Kristian Zahrtmann is re-emerging. Zahrtmann lived and attended the Abruzzo country with great continuity, during a period that lasted more than three decades, creating a school in Civita, every year with increasing numbers of students but also friends and colleagues as P.S. Krøyer. The small village had become for Zahrtmann the materialization of the Italian dream, the place where he felt at home and where he was then conferred honorary citizenship in 1902. He was always dressed in white and had a cordial relationship with all people, remembered an old witness. A story slowly slipped into oblivion, at least in Italy, and the small mountain village slipped into an inexorable decline, today many people do not even know that the village is in Abruzzo. Yet Civita, between the end of the’800 and early’900, was very known in Denmark. In 1908 in Copenhagen at the Kunstforeningen the exhibition “Civita d’Antino of Danish painters” was held, the exposition gathered Zahrtmann and its pupils artworks after 25 years of Abruzzo attendance. And many paintings are often titled “Italian landscape” and exhibited in various Scandinavian museum have Civita d’Antino and Abruzzo as subject. In the last five years I spent part of my time to investigate and recover this history, reconstructing the relationship between the local community and the Scandinavian artists. The glimpses of the country life, the mountain landscapes and the humanity of the peasant world have an artistic value, but also documentary and, at the same time, symbolic of a lost world but open since then to European culture.

In this catalog I think it is interesting to notice that a distant event – the first Venice Biennale of 1895 (then known as the “International Art Exhibition of Venice”) – saw a remarkable coincidence: the simultaneous presence of Francesco Paolo Michetti, “The daughter of Jorio” and “The Procession of San Lidano (born in Civita d’Antino) by Kristian Zahrtmann, two works with strong themes of Abruzzo. Gabriele D’Annunzio went to Venice on 23 September 1895 to visit the exhibition and, in a short letter to FP Michetti, he expressed his negative opinion about the quality of works exhibited, except – of course – “The Daughter of Iorio” and some Scandinavian and Danish …”(2). The exhibition was attended by some three hundred works by artists including Zahrtmann, Kroyer and Viggo Pedersen. D’Annunzio was obviously impressed by the procession of Abruzzo by Zahrtmann, although his attention was mainly focused at the work of his brotherly friend .. and then – unfortunately – during those years the life and the interests of the great poet from Pescara were distant from his region. Still there is a lot to be studied. The exhibition, which opens a window on that distant season, looks forward intercepting other Scandinavian artists who found in Abruzzo, now like then, a place of inspiration and creativity. In the post-earthquake Abruzzo of today this exhibition in Pescara represents one of the signs of vitality and recovery of an injured but ready to recovering region, through the memory of the extraordinary human and artistic figure of Kristian Zahrtmann, those links with European culture that waiting to be reinstated after having been forgotten for so long. (1)Antonio Bini took care of the Italian edition of Johannes Jørgensen “Civita d’Antino”, ed. This is the text of the brief letter addressed to Michetti on the the letterhead of Hotel Danieli, where the poet lived during his permanence in Venice:

My dear Ciccillo, this morning I have been to the exposition. Oh! which disgust! Truly, your painting is the only one worthy in the city where the pure Carpaccio painted. Respected is the sincerity of some Scandinavian and Danish, everything else is low level, dishonest in the sense of the word … I embrace you, your Gabriele.
