Kristian Zahrtmann é un nome conosciuto nella cerchia artistica danese. Quasi tutti i danesi hanno inoltre sentito parlare della “Scuola Zahrtmann” – quasi nessuno di essi collega però detta scuola con l’Abruzzo in Italia. Peter Henrik Christian (Kristian) Zahrtmann (1843-1917) ha influenzato tante generazioni di arte pittoresca danese. Senza Zahrtmann e la sua scuola la predetta arte molto probabilmente si sarebbe realizzata diversamente, anche se non lo possiamo dire con assoluta certezza. Certi siamo invece, che la scuola di Zahrtmann ha sì influenzato tanti artisti che oggi sono riconosciuti in tutta l’Europa e nel resto del mondo. Zahrtmann era un personaggio carismatico.
Era un grande pedagogo e uno degli idealisti più notevoli che osava e sapeva tanto, caratteristiche che si riflettono nel suo uso dei colori e nella loro composizione. Sapeva unire naturalezza e bellezza in un modo straordinario. In realtà forse offriva solo quello che a tanti artisti nei giorni d’oggi manca: la sincerità. Senza dubbio amava i suoi soggiorni estivi a Civita d’Antino, la gente del posto, la vita quotidiana, la luce fantastica, la natura. Ed é proprio quest’amore che si riflette nel suo lavora artistico. Zahrtmann insegnava al suo pubblico come vedere e amare la sua arte, un’arte che esprime un forte amore di un artista verso il motivo. Zahrtmann e gli altri artisti impiegavano parecchi giorni per arrivare a Civita. L’ultimo pezzo di strada, con l’asino, non era sempre un gran divertimento. Città come Civita, quasi dimenticate però sempre vivaci, mantengono la memoria e la cultura antica e ci fanno vedere lo sviluppo dell’Abruzzo antico e quello moderno. Persone famose Molti allievi di Zahrtmann sono più conosciuti del loro maestro. Dell’ultima generazione si possono menzionare nomi come Harald Giersing, Sirgurd Swane, Olaf Rude e Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen. Si tratta di artisti, dei quali l’arte é ben rappresentata nei musei d’arte. L’artista più noto di tutti é P. S. Krøyer, proveniente da Skagen – la cima assolutamente più al nord della Danimarca -, il quale molto probabilmente trovava l’identica luce forte nelle montagne dell’Abruzzo come nel nord della Danimarca. Inoltre é degno di nota che il grande poeta danese H. C. Andersen conosceva il giovane Zahrtmann e che i due corrispondevano tra di loro. Poco prima del 75° compleanno di Andersen, nel 1875, il giovane Zahrtmann – prima di partire per l’Italia – visitò il grande poeta. Dopo la visita di Zahrtmann H.C.Andersen annotò tre parole nel suo diario: “Zahrtmann é partito”. La scelta dell’Abruzzo. Quando abbiamo deciso di comprare una piccola casa in Italia, né mio marito Rolf né io, avevamo in mente Civita d’Antino.
Nemmeno avevamo in mente di seguire Zahrtmann. Quello che per noi contava, era il clima mite, la luce, la gente ospitale, la buona cucina italiana, e innanzitutto, un posto che finanziariamente potevamo permetterci.Regioni come la Toscana, la Calabria e le Marche in Danimarca sono abbastanza conosciuti – non così l’Abruzzo. Il prezzo della casa, la distanza dalla Danimarca e la natura straordinaria erano fattori importanti che hanno contribuito alla nostra decisione di comprare casa nell’Abruzzo. Non abbiamo cavalcato l’asino, ma ugualmente abbiamo impiegato tanto tempo per raggiungere l’Abruzzo. Abbiamo girato per più di 4000 chilometri in macchina nell’Italia centrale e meridionale, prima di trovare la Valle Subequana e Gagliano Aterno. Quando ci siamo poi accorti del fatto di trovarci vicinissimi all’antica colonia d’arte danese, questa é stata soltanto una delle tante sorprese ed esperienze positive e meravigliose che abbiamo incontrato. Non pensiamo però che ciò, anche se lo avessimo saputo prima, sarebbe stato significativo per la nostra scelta, Abbiamo l’impressione di essere finiti lì dove ci troviamo a nostro agio, anche se non parliamo ancora la lingua. Amiamo le montagne, la gente, la fauna, la storia e la tranquillità e nel contempo essere vicini a Roma, Napoli, Pescara, il mare e le piste da sci, tutti posti che si possono raggiungere facilmente da Gagliano Aterno. È un grande piacere per noi di avere la possibilità di poter invitare tanti artisti danesi per lavorare ed esporre la loro arte nella nostra galleria. Gli artisti che già hanno visitato Gagliano Aterno e lavorato con noi, sono rimasti estremamente affascinati.
Da queste esperienze é nata l’idea di istituire una scuola estiva per un ristretto numero di artisti. Ancora non sappiamo bene come il progetto si svilupperà. È comunque un piacere per noi poter far vedere e condividere l’Abruzzo con altri. Sarebbe nostro desiderio che nel futuro anche altri artisti si stabilissero nei dintorni. “Zahrtmann é partito”, scriveva H. C. Andersen nel 1875. Noi comunque non abbiamo intenzioni di partire. Abruzzo é come la favola della quale Andersen non aveva mai raccontato. Questa é la nostra esperienza. ABRUZZO – THE BRIGHTNESS OF ITS COLOURS HAS INFLUENCED THE DANISH PAINTERS By Kirsten Murhart, an artist – www.murhart.dk
Zahrtmann is well known among Danish painters. Also, most Danish people have heard about Zahrtmann’s School, but nobody can make connection of this school with Abruzzo in Italy. Zahrtmann influenced a whole generation of Scandinavian painters. Danish Painting would be something different without him and his art school, even if we don’t know for sure. But we are sure that Zahrtmann’s school has influenced so many artists well-known in Europe and the rest of the world. ìZahrtmann was a charismatic figure. He was a great master and an idealist, an artist who could know and dare anything. These characteristics are found in his use of colour painting and in colour composition. He was able to mix naturalness and beauty in an extraordinary way. Maybe he had that quality which is so lacking in many artists nowadays – sincerity. He really enjoyed lifestyle during summer stay in Civita d’Antino, he loved local people and nature, its fantastic brightness.
This love is present in his artistic work. Zahrtmann invited the viewer to interpret and love his art, since in his painting the artist expresses his strong love for his subject. It took several days for Zahrtmann and the other artists to arrive in Civita D’Antino. Travelling on a donkey’s back was not easy, especially in the last part of the route. The abandoned but still vibrant villages like Civita, keep the memory of an ancient culture alive. Besides they show us modern development and old Abruzzo charm. Famous People. Many students of Zahrtmann’s school became more famous than their master. The last generation of Danish painters includes Harald Giersing, Sirgurd Swane, Olaf Rude and Swen Havsteen-Mikkelsen. Their art is well represented in Art museums. The most famous artist of them all is P.S.Kroyer who came from Skagen, the northest point of Denmark. He was evidently attracted by the strong light intensity in Abruzzo mountains like in the north Denmark. It’s noteworthy the great Danish poet H. C. Andersen knew the young Zahrtmann and they wrote each other. Just before Andersen’s 75th birthday in 1875, the young Zahrtmann made his first visit to the great poet. After Zahrtmann’s visit, (heading to Italy), H. C. Andersen noted in his diary three words: ”Zahrtmann has left”. The choice of Abruzzo When we decided to buy a small house in Italy, neither my husband Rolf nor I had heard of Civita D’Antino, nor we wanted to follow the steps of Zahrtmann. What is important to us is to have mild climate, friendly people, good Italian food, and of course, a house that would be within our budget. Italian regions like Tuscany, Calabria and Marches are mostly known in Denmark, but Abruzzo is not. Our decision to buy a house in Abruzzo was affected by important factors: house prices, the short distance from Denmark, the extraordinary beauty of nature. We never rode the donkey but it took so long to come to Abruzzo. We travelled by car over 4000 km in the south and centre of Italy before coming to Valle Subequana and Gagliano Aterno. When we realized we’re very close to the Danish artists’ colony, it wasn’t our only surprisingly positive and marvellous experience we had. At the end we feel comfortable here even if we can’t yet speak Italian.
We love the mountains, fauna and people, history and laid back lifestyle. We are near Rome, Naples, Pescara, both the beach and the ski-resorts. All these places are easily reachable from Gagliano Aterno. It’s a great pleasure having a chance to invite so many Danish artists who may work and show their work in our gallery. The artists who previously worked here and visited Gagliano Aterno, were hugely captivated by it. This experience gave us the idea of running a summer school for a limited number of artists. We don’t know exactly how the project will evolve. However, we are pleased to let everybody know and appreciate the Abruzzo region. Our greatest wish is that hopefully more artists will come here in the future. “Zahrtmann has left”- H. C. Andersen wrote in 1 875. We, on the other hand, aren’t going to leave. Abruzzo is like a fairy tale that Andersen never wrote. That’s our experience. It would be great if one day we could organize an art exhibition in Copenhagen, presenting works of Danish artists from Abruzzo. Translation from Italian by Laura Borgione
